Webb Named Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week

PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan freshman Alan Webb (Reston, Va./South Lakes HS) has been named Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week for men's cross country, the league office announced Tuesday (Sept. 25).
Webb won his first scored collegiate meet last Friday (Sept. 21) by posting a time of 24:05 at the Great American Cross Country in Rock Hill, S.C. Teammate Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./North HS) finished in second place, three seconds behind Webb, as the duo outpaced 262 other competitors to help lead Michigan to a second-place finish. Only North Carolina State, with 34 points, had a better showing than Michigan, which scored 67 points.

The 14th-ranked Wolverines' next meet will be Saturday (Sept. 29), when it travels to Minneapolis, Minn., to compete in the Roy Griak Invitational at 11 a.m. CDT. The race, which will cover 8,000 meters, will be held on the University of Minnesota's Les Bolstad Golf Course and will feature teams such as No. 5 Providence, No. 6 Wisconsin, No. 16 Oregon and No. 20 Minnesota.
