Last Week
U-M's games at Hartford (Sept. 14) and Connecticut (Sept. 16) were cancelled due to the terrorist attacks last week. Michigan was able to schedule a non-conference match against Detroit on Monday (Sept. 17) in which the Wolverines won 4-0. The win marked their second consecutive shutout of the season, holding the Titans to just two shots. Goalkeepers Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) and Bre Bennett (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) split time in net, but neither goalie had to make a save. U-M's attack came early as the Wolverines recorded 19 shots and two goals in the first half. Freshman Kate Morgan (San Jose, Calif./Archbishop Mitty HS) and junior Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) scored for Michigan in the first half, while junior Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS), who scored on a penalty kick, and freshman Laney Rosin (Potomac, Md./Thomas S. Wootton HS) recorded goals in the second half. U-M outshot Detroit 30-2.
Big Ten Openers
In the last two seasons U-M has opened the Big Ten Conference season with two-game road trips and has posted a 3-0-1 record. Last year the Wolverines recorded two wins on the road against Purdue (2-1) and Indiana (2-0), while in 1999 they defeated Ohio State (2-1) and tied Penn State (0-0) in double overtime. Michigan is 6-5-1 all-time in Big Ten season-opening weekends.
Downing Detroit
Monday's (Sept. 17) game against Detroit was the first time U-M faced the Titans since 1998, when the Wolverines hosted the Michigan Challenge Cup and defeated Detroit 3-1. Michigan is 5-1 all-time against Detroit.
Returning to the Lineup
Abby Crumpton was back in action against Detroit after missing U-M's previous two games against Kentucky (Sept. 7) and Dayton (Sept. 9) due to a strained calf. Crumpton started in both games against Loyola Marymount (Aug. 31) and California (Sept. 2), recording one goal on seven shots.
Sullivant's Streak
Amy Sullivant has recorded at least one point in each of the Wolverines' five games this season. In 23 games last season, Sullivant recorded three goals for six points. Sullivant's scoring streak:
Opponent | Goals | Assists | Points |
Loyola Marymount | 2 | 0 | 4 |
Cal | 1 | 0 | 2 |
Kentucky | 0 | 1 | 1 |
Dayton | 0 | 1 | 1 |
Detroit | 1 | 1 | 3 |
Totals | 4 | 3 | 11 |
Wolverine Firsts
Laney Rosin got her first goal as a Wolverine against Detroit (Sept. 17) to cap the 4-0 win. Captain Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) recorded her first assist of the season on Rosin's goal. Amy Sullivant's goal came on a penalty kick, the first penalty kick for the team this season and the first of Sullivant's career.
Deja Vu
Last season the Wolverines started out 0-3 with two losses on the road and one at home, before winning their first game of the season in their second game at home. U-M has started out the 2001 season in similar fashion, dropping two road games and its season home opener before winning against Dayton in its second game at home. Last year the Wolverines finished third in the Big Ten and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
