FORT WAYNE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan men's soccer team dropped a 3-0 outcome to Notre Dame in day two of the IUPU-Fort Wayne Invitational today (Sunday, Aug. 26) on Hefner Field. In the final exhibition match of the year for the Wolverines, the Irish outshot Michigan by only one (15-14) in a contest in which the score was not indicative of how the game was played.
Michigan had four scoring chances in the first half, including two corner kicks, but the Notre Dame defense held the Wolverines scoreless. Junior Brad King (Portage, Mich./Northern HS) kept the Wolverines in the contest, making three saves in the first 45 minutes of play.
After intermission, the Irish took more control over the game, as Michigan put in some new players at new positions in preparation for the regular season. The 0-0 tie was finally broken when Erich Braun scored an empty-net goal at the 52:09 mark. Notre Dame scored its second goal of the game off a header from Brian Jarvis as the clock showed 74:23. The Irish added one more goal before time expired and held off the Maize and Blue from breaking through, despite a strong offensive push at the end of the match.
Sophomore Ian Hirschfield (Ft. Lauderdale, Fla./Pine Crest HS) led the way for Michigan with three shots on goal. Freshman Knox Cameron (Bronx, N.Y./Cardinal Spellman HS) and junior Robert Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit) each added three shots, one of which for Turpin was on goal.
Michigan will open up the regular season against Robert Morris on Saturday (Sept. 1) at the Michigan State Invitational in East Lansing, Mich., with kickoff at noon.
