Wolverines Tie for Seventh at Big Ten Championships

URBANA, Ill. -- The University of Michigan men's golf team climbed three spots on the final day to finish tied for seventh at the Big Ten Conference Championships today (Sunday, May 6) at Stone Creek Golf Club. The Wolverines used a three-under-par final round of 285 to help them finish with a 1,168 championship total and move into a tie with Wisconsin (301-287-292-288). The Wolverines tallied team totals of 296, 293 and 294 during the first two days of the championship.
Northwestern made it three straight team titles as the Wildcats ran away with the 2001 title. The Wildcats (289-280-284-275) finished with a 20-under championship total of 1,132, which was 13 strokes better than runner-up Purdue (286-283-285-291/1145). Ohio State (289-297-284-291/1151) finished third. Northwestern's Luke Donald (70-65-73-71/279) made to back-to-back individual medalist honors as he won by two strokes over Ohio State's Mike Austin (74-69-66-72/281). Iowa's Bo Anderson (71-69-71-71/282) was third.
As for the Wolverines, fifth-year senior Scott Hayes (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester HS) led the Wolverines as he used his third best career round (68) in the final round to jump 10 spots into a tie for 22nd. Hayes carded rounds of 74, 76 and 72 during the first two days to finish with a 290 championship total.
Junior Andrew Chapman (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) tied for 26th after firing an even-par 72 in the final round. He tallied round scores of 73, 72 and 75 during the first two days for a 292 championships total. Fellow junior Andy Matthews (Ada, Mich./Forest Hills Central HS) finished just behind as he tied for 28th after firing his third straight round of 73 in the final round. Matthews finished with rounds of 74, 73 and 73 for a 293 championship total.
Redshirt junior Kyle Kilcherman (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) tied for 37th (75-72-78-72) after finishing with a 297 championships performance, and redshirt freshman Chris Kellogg (Traverse City, Mich./Central HS) finished 52nd (79-86-74-74/313).
With the Big Ten Conference Championships now completed, the Wolverines now wait to see if they will be selected for the NCAA Central Regional, which will be played Thursday through Saturday, May 17-19, at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. Regional selections will be announced Tuesday (May 8).

• Scott Hayes' final round of 68 was the third best round of his career. He has twice fired a career-best 67 -- in the first round of the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 9-10, 2001) and in the first round of the 2000 Big Ten Conference Championships (May 5-7, 2000).
• Andy Matthews has now played in 37 consecutive tournaments for the Wolverines. In addition, he now has shot 31 straight rounds below 80. The last time he shot 80 or above was when he had an 80 in the third round of the Inverness Intercollegiate, the first tournament of the 2000-01 season.
