ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team hosted the first day of the Len Paddock Invitational today (Friday, May 11) on Ferry Field. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) led the way for the Maize and Blue with its only first-place title on the day. Phillips won the hammer throw with a heave of 183-6, which was 21 feet further than any other competitor.
The Wolverines' next best finish in the field came in the high jump as sophomore Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) was runner-up in the event, clearing a height of 5-5 3/4.
Hanna Palamaa of Eastern Michigan crushed the Ferry Field record of 12-1 3/4 (set by Dana Ellis of LCTC in 2000) with an NCAA provisional mark of 12-10, which occurred under poor weather conditions as well. Michigan sophomore Anna Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) took fourth for the Wolverines.
The javelin was the final field event of the afternoon, and Eastern Michigan's Brit Klanert broke a 13-year-old Ferry Field record with her toss of 158-0. The previous record was held by Decia Agnew of Minnesota (157-2) set in 1988. Freshman Janelle Jaha (Stanley, N.D./Stanley HS) placed sixth for the Maize and Blue with her distance of 123-4.
Track events began in the evening as freshman Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) posted a third-place finish in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1:01.48. The other top-five finish on the night for the Maize and Blue came from senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS), who took fourth (4:36.31) in the 1,500-meter run in her final home meet as a Wolverine.
Michigan will be back in action tomorrow (May 12) for the second and final day of the Len Paddock Invitational, beginning at 11 a.m.
