Wolverines Drop 5-2 Road Decision at Penn State

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis squad completed an empty weekend, losing a 5-2 match to Penn State Sunday (April 8) at the Sarni Tennis Center. The Wolverines (7-9, 2-5 Big Ten) lost the doubles point to the Nittany Lions (12-5, 4-2 Big Ten), and could manage only a pair of singles victories in the defeat.
Penn State won matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 doubles spots to grab the team point and a 1-0 advantage in the match. Michigan freshmen Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) and Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) kept the Nittany Lions from a doubles sweep with an 8-3 victory over Teresa Whiteside and Leigh Ann Merryman at No. 3. It was the seventh straight doubles win for the freshman duo (8-1 overall record).
Penn State secured the victory with wins in four of the six singles matches. The Wolverines received a dominating 6-0, 6-0 win by senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) at No. 3 over PSU's Judy Wang. Sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) won her 10th singles match of the season, beating Merryman in three sets (0-6, 6-3, 6-4) at No. 6.
Michigan returns to Ann Arbor for its final home match, against Iowa on Sunday, April 15 (11 a.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The match will be the final home contest for seniors Fuzesi, Marya Farah (Linden, Mich./Powers Catholic HS) and Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS).
