Michigan Falls to Hawkeyes to Close Home Schedule

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis squad finished its home schedule with a difficult 5-2 loss to Iowa Sunday (April 15) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (7-10, 2-6 Big Ten) lost the doubles point to the Hawkeyes (10-8, 4-4) and could manage only two singles victories in the match.
Iowa jumped out to a 1-0 advantage by winning two of the three tightly contested doubles matches. The Hawkeyes posted an 8-4 win at No. 3 to get things started and gained the team point as Toni Neykova and Deni Alexandrova posted a 9-7 victory at No. 1. The Wolverines kept Iowa from a doubles sweep as freshmen Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) and Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) collected a 9-7 victory over Megan Kearney and Jody Scheldt at the No. 2 spot.
Iowa claimed four singles victories to win the match, pulling through with three-set victories at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6, and receiving a straight-set win from Megan Kearney at No. 5. The Wolverines earned their first team point as senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) tallied a 6-3, 6-2 win against Steffi Hoch at No. 3. Michigan's other victory came at the No. 2 spot, with Nolan posting a 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 comeback win against Deni Alexandrova.
