Last Year ... Wolverines Win Marshall Invitational
Led by Mike Affeldt (1998-2000) and Michael Harris (1997-2000), the Wolverines held on to their lead in rainy and windy conditions to win the Marshall Invitational (April 7-8, 2000) at Guyan Golf and Country Club. The Wolverines fired a final round of 301 to finish with a tournament total of 877 (288-288-301), which was good enough for their second team title of the season. Miami (Ohio) finished as the runner-up with 881 after rounds of 288-296-297. Affeldt led the charge in the third round for the Wolverines as he moved up from a tie for 12th to finish with a career-best tie for second after firing rounds of 77-68-72 for a tournament total of 217. Harris continued his strong play in the poor weather conditions as he tied for sixth after rounds of 67-75-76 for a 218 tournament total. Andrew Chapman tied for 11th after shooting rounds of 72-76-72 for a 220 total. Scott Hayes tied for 29th (72-71-81/224) and Andy Matthews tied for 79th (79-74-81/234).
Strong Final Round Boosts U-M to Ninth at Dr Pepper
The Wolverines used a strong final team round of 298 to move up five spots in the final team standings and finish ninth at the Dr Pepper Intercollegiate (March 24-25) at the Tanglewood Resort. The Wolverines tallied a 311 in the rain-delayed first round to finish with a 609 Intercollegiate total. Andrew Chapman and Scott Carlton followed each other's leads as they finished tied for 20th after rounds of 77 and 73 for 150 totals. As for the rest of the Maize and Blue, Scott Hayes tied for 44th (78-76/154); Andy Matthews tied for 49th (79-76/155) and Kyle Kilcherman tied for 51st (79-77/156). Kevin Hinton competed as an individual and tied for 57th (79-78/157).
The Rankings
Michigan is ranked 74th in the country according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings (April 1) to help give the Big Ten eight teams in the top 100. No. 18 Northwestern is the highest ranked Big Ten program, with Minnesota resting at No. 26. Other top 100 Big Ten teams include: No. 59 Purdue, No. 64 Ohio State, No. 67 Penn State, No. 83 Wisconsin and No. 92 Michigan State. Other ranked conference teams are No. 113 Indiana, No. 115 Illinois and No. 121 Iowa. There are 280 Division I golf programs that are ranked.
More Rankings
Scott Hayes led the Wolverines all fall and is currently ranked 213th in the nation according to the Golfweek/Sagarin rankings (April 1) with a 73.34 rating. Hayes is the highest ranked Wolverine of the 2,270 golfers nationally. Andy Matthews is the next closest to Hayes at No. 272 (73.55) and Andrew Chapman is at No. 368 (74.07). Georgia Tech's Bryce Molder in the No. 1 golfer in the country with a 67.41 rating.
Stretch Key for Wolverines
The Midwest stretch of tournaments begins with the Marshall Invitational (April 6-7) in Huntington, W.Va., and continues with a trip to Columbus, Ohio, at the Kepler Invitational (April 14-15). Michigan closes out the spring season at the Fossum Invitational (April 28-29) in East Lansing, Mich. The Wolverines then head back to Champaign, Ill., and Stone Creek Golf Club for the Big Ten Championships (May 4-6). These tournaments will be key positioning battles for the Wolverines as they make a run for the NCAA Central Regional (May 10-12).
Matthews Continues to Stay Consistent
Junior Andy Matthew's third-place individual finish at the Wolverine South Invitational (March 3-4) was a career best. His previous best finish was a tie for seventh at the Xavier Invitational (Oct. 11-12, 1999). He followed that performance with a consistent performance at the El Diablo Intercollegiate (March 17-18), where he tied for 13th after rounds of 72-73 for a 145 total. So far this year, Matthews has been among the top three Wolverines in each tournament, and he led Michigan at the Northern Intercollegiate (Sept. 30-Oct. 1) and at El Diablo. He is second on the team with a 74.42 stroke average.
Chapman Gets First Title
With the win at the Wolverine South Invitational (March 3-4), junior Andrew Chapman won the first individual medalist honors of his Michigan career. His previous best tournament was a fourth-place finish at the 2000 Wolverine South (March 4-5, 2000) and a tie for fourth at the Marshall Invitational (April 9-10, 2000). In addition, Chapman's final round of 69 was a career best and marked the first time he has broken the 70-stroke barrier in his Michigan career. He has shot 70 four times as a Wolverine. For the season he is third on the team with a 75.00 stroke average.
Make That Two New Champions
Andrew Chapman became the second Wolverine this season to win his first career individual title. Fifth-year senior Scott Hayes claimed his first medalist honors at the Inverness Intercollegiate (Sept. 18-19, 2000). Interestingly, the titles came in the first tournament of the fall and spring seasons -- Chapman's title opened the spring season while Hayes' title opened the fall season. Hayes leads the Wolverines with a 73.71 stroke average while Chapman is third at 75.00, which is nearly a stroke better than his career-best average.
