Wolverines Edged at Purdue to Close Regular Season

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team completed its regular-season schedule with a close 4-3 setback against Purdue Sunday (April 22) at the Lafayette Sports Center. The Boilermakers (8-15, 3-7 Big Ten) swept all three doubles matches and pulled through with three singles victories to escape with the victory.
Trailing 1-0 heading into singles, the Wolverines (7-12, 2-8 Big Ten) nearly pulled the upset but was unable to win the necessary four singles matches to claim the victory. Michigan received a pair of straight-set wins from freshman Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) at the No. 2 and No. 5 spots, respectively. Freshman Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) rallied from a set down to post a 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 victory at the top spot against Erika Quebe.
Michigan had an opportunity to earn the victory but suffered a pair of three-set losses to the Boilermakers at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Purdue's other singles win came at No. 3 as Gretchen Haynor posted a 6-2, 6-3 victory over senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium).
The Wolverines await a first-round opponent for next week's (April 26-29) Big Ten Championship held at the Stickney Tennis Center on the Ohio State University campus.
