Michigan Falls to Wisconsin at Big Ten Championship

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team wrapped up its season today (Thursday, April 26) at the 2001 Big Ten Championship, losing 4-2 against No. 7 seed Wisconsin. The 10th-seeded Wolverines (7-13) lost a closely contested doubles point to the Badgers (9-15) and could manage only two singles victories.
The schools split the first two doubles matches, with the Wolverine freshman duo of Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) winning an 8-3 match at No. 2. The Badgers clinched the team point with an 8-4 victory by Linde Mues and Teresa Gonzaga at No. 3 over senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) and sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS).
Trailing 1-0 in the match, the Wolverines were unable to prevail as the Badgers claimed the necessary three singles victories. Michigan gained its two points as Nolan posted a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Vanessa Rauh at No. 2, and sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) collected a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 5. Wisconsin received straight-set victories from Mues and Gonzaga at No. 4 and No. 6, and April Gabler clinched advancement in the tournament with a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win against Tipirneni at the top singles slot.
Wisconsin advances to face No. 2 seed Illinois Friday (April 27, 10 a.m.) in the Big Ten Women's Tennis Championship quarterfinals, while Michigan ends its season with a 7-13 dual match record.
