WALNUT, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team was at the Mt. SAC Relays, hosted by Mt. San Antonio College over the weekend (April 20-22). The non-scoring event was highlighted by junior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) and freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS), who achieved NCAA qualifying marks in their respective events.
The weekend started with a pair of Wolverines competing in distance events on Friday. Redshirt freshman Jane Martineau (Mt. Pleasant, Mich./Mt. Pleasant HS) was 12th in the 3,000-meter run to begin things for the Wolverines. Jazwinski then ran a personal-best and NCAA automatic time in the 5,000 with a time of 16:06.71. Jazwinski was 16th in the event, but had the ninth fastest collegiate time.
Saturday belonged to Michigan's field events. Bickett achieved a personal-best and NCAA provisional mark of 171-9 in the discus en route to a third-place finish. Sophomore Nicole DeNamur (Algoma, Wis./Algoma HS) continued her strong outdoor season by taking second in the high jump.
Other top performances on the day came in the middle distance events. Senior Adrienne Hunter (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) gave the Wolverines their second runner-up of the day with her second-place finish in the 800-meter run. Senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS) came in sixth in the 1,500 for another top-10 finish for Michigan.
Michigan's 1,600-meter relay foursome produced the Wolverines' top finish on the final day of competition by taking second, trailing only Purdue by just over a second. In the shot put, the Maize and Blue had two athletes in the top 10. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) took fourth, while Bickett finished off her outstanding weekend in eighth.
The Wolverines will be at two track meets this upcoming weekend. Michigan will send a partial squad to the Penn Relays (April 26-28) in Philadelphia, Pa., while the other split squad will compete at the Drake Relays (April 27-28) in Des Moines, Iowa.
