Wolverines Dominate Field Events at Hillsdale Relays

HILLSDALE, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team was at the Hillsdale Relays on Saturday (April 28) to compete on the Ken Harrick Track. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) turned in quite a performance by winning both the discus and hammer throw and adding a runner-up finish in the shot put. Her throw of 178-4 1/2 in the hammer set both facility and meet records.
In addition to Phillips, the Wolverines turned in many other top results over the two-day event. Freshman Adreana Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) started things off on the track with a third-place finish in the 100-meter dash. Junior Tasha Phillips (Sarasota, Fla./Booker HS) ran to a runner-up showing in the 100-meter hurdles and added a ninth-place finish in the 100.
In the middle distances, freshman Amy Hatfield (Saline, Mich./Saline HS) posted a sixth-place finish in the 1,500-meter run. Former Wolverine Sarah Hamilton (1996-2000), running unattached, took first in the event.
Phillips was not the only Wolverine to shine in the field. Freshman Janelle Jaha (Stanley, N.D./Stanley HS) took second in the javelin, while fellow freshman Ashley Eckel (Grand Blanc, Mich./Grand Blanc HS) rounded out the shot put, coming in 10th.
The Wolverines also had two athletes in the top 10 in the pole vault competition. Sophomore Anna Fisher (Ann Arbor, Mich./Gabriel Richard HS) was sixth, while senior Tiffany Sylvertooth (Ypsilanti, Mich./Ypsilanti HS) came in seventh, both reaching a height of 10-6.
Michigan will be back in action for three meets next weekend. The Wolverines start with the Cardinal Twilight (May 4) in Palo Alto, Calif., then head to the Toledo Invitational May (5-6) in Toledo, Ohio, and round out the weekend with the Jesse Owens Classic (May 6) in Columbus, Ohio.
