RALEIGH, N.C. -- The University of Michigan women's track and field team sent its throwers to the Raleigh Relays on Saturday and Sunday (March 30-31) for the two-day non-scoring competition at North Carolina State. Sophomore April Phillips (Fraser, Mich./Fraser HS) highlighted the meet by breaking the U-M outdoor record in the hammer throw with a toss of 166-2 1/2 for a seventh-place finish. Phillips broke Julie Presley's (1999-2000) record of 162-4, which she set in 1999.
In addition to her record-setting performance in the hammer, Phillips led after the prelims in the shot put with a mark of 46-1 1/2 and ended up third after the finals. Freshman Melissa Bickett (Akron, Ohio/Revere HS) began the weekend with a strong start Friday as she finished runner-up in the discus with a throw of 160-7.
Michigan will be back in action at the Duke Invitational on April 6-7 in Durham, N.C.
