On Saturday (March 31), Michigan had a pair of freshmen who started out the weekend in top form. Adrena Williams (Berkeley, Calif./James Logan HS) took first in the fourth heat of the 100-meter dash to qualify her for the finals on Sunday. Vera Simms (Mililani, Hawaii/Mililani HS) showed her durability as she took part in three individual events on the day. Simms had two third-place finishes in the 100 (heat two) and 400-meter hurdles, and came in 27th in the long jump. Junior Shalina Rankin (Ypsilanti, Mich./Lincoln HS) had U-M's other top performance on the day, winning the 400-meter hurdles.
The Wolverines returned to action on Sunday with several other top finishes. Sophomore Carly Knazze (Southfield, Mich./Southfield HS) won the afternoon 400-meter dash, with senior teammate Regine Caruthers (Inglewood, Calif./St. Bernard HS) taking third. In the morning portion of the 400, Rankin and Simms came in first and third, respectively. Also in the sprints, Williams placed eighth in the 100.
The middle distances were kind to the Maize and Blue, which was led by its upper classmen. Senior Katie Jazwinski (Grand Rapids, Mich./West Catholic HS) had a terrific day as she was victorious in the 800-meter run in the morning, and followed that with a sixth-place showing in the afternoon's 1,500 with an NCAA provisional time of 4:23.51. Senior Lisa Ouellet (Sudbury, Ontario/LaSalle SS) also ran well in the morning 1,500, taking second.
The Wolverines ran well in the two relays that they were a part of Sunday. Michigan produced a runner-up and third-place time in the 400-meter relay and 1,600-meter relay, respectively.
The highlight of the day for the Maize and Blue in the field on the day came from sophomore Teyonna Simpson (Fremont, Calif./Mission San Jose HS), who added another second-place finish for the Wolverines with an NCAA provisional qualifying mark of 42-3 1/2 in the triple jump.
Up next for Michigan will be a trip to the Duke Invitational on April 6 in Durham, N.C.
