ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 13-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team concluded the Southern Division Tournament with a pair of victories on Sunday (March 25) at Canham Natatorium. The Wolverines defeated Indiana University in a hard-fought 10-9 overtime victory before finishing off Slippery Rock University 9-6 in the conclusion of the two-day event.
The Wolverines (14-9-1) opened their doubleheader with a 10-9 victory over Indiana that was decided in sudden-death overtime. Michigan got on the board first, but Indiana quickly responded and added three goals in the remaining minutes of the first period. The Wolverines tied it up and took a 5-4 lead into halftime. Both teams fought hard in the second half, battling to a 7-7 tie at the end of regulation.
In the first three-minute overtime segment, the Hoosiers scored twice, taking a 9-7 lead. The Wolverines notched two in the second overtime segment, bringing the score deadlocked at nine. As the two teams began sudden-death overtime, junior Mandi Hagedorn (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) slid past Indiana defenders and tucked the ball in the net, ending the game with a 10-9 win for the Maize and Blue.
Melissa Karjala (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) led the Wolverines in scoring. Karjala recorded her first hat trick of the season, finding the net three times, while Sonda notched two.
The Wolverines returned to the water for the second game of the doubleheader with an impressive 9-6 victory over Slippery Rock. Michigan got on the board first with a penalty shot from Karjala. The Wolverines quickly drew out a 3-0 lead in the first, before the Rock came storming back to tie the game at four goals apiece at the halfway mark.
Michigan dominated in the second half, pulling away from Slippery Rock by hitting five goals in a six-minute time span. Slippery Rock added two more goals in the waning minutes to close the game at 9-6.
Rachel Burkons (Van Nuys, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS) joined Sonda and Karjala in the scoring lead as all three Wolverines tallied two goals. Hagedorn, Abbi Rowe (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) and Angela Galardi (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) accounted for the remaining goals, with Galardi netting her first goal of the season.
The Wolverines return to action at the Indiana Invitational on Saturday and Sunday (March 31-April 1) in Bloomington, Ind. Michigan will face off against varsity teams Indiana and Massachusetts as well as Michigan State's club team.

Senior tri-captain Melissa Karjala led all players in scoring during the six-game tournament, netting nine goals, including two separate hat tricks in Michigan's victories over Slippery Rock (March 24) and Indiana (March 25).
Michigan concluded the tournament with a 4-0 record, with Indiana finishing even at 2-2 and Slippery Rock ending with a 0-4 record.
In the three meetings this season between Michigan and Indiana, the teams have tied once (4-4 on Feb. 18) and competed in two overtime games won by Michigan (6-5 on March 24 and 10-9 on March 25).
