Michigan Has Win Streak Snapped by Golden Gophers

BLOOMINGTON, Minn. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team had its three-match winning streak halted Sunday (March 25), losing 5-2 against Minnesota at the Northwest Athletic Club. The Wolverines (6-7, 1-3 Big Ten) won a pair of singles matches, while the Golden Gophers (9-3, 2-2 Big Ten) gained their fifth straight win by winning the doubles point and four singles victories.
Minnesota gained a 1-0 advantage with victories in two of the three doubles matches. The Golden Gophers earned an 8-2 victory at the top spot, and won a tight 8-6 match at No. 2 as Jennifer Howard and Tammy Wang beat junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) and sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS). The Wolverines kept Minnesota from a doubles sweep as freshmen Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) and Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) posted an 8-4 win over Amy Thomas and Brandi Watts at No. 3.
The Golden Gophers secured the victory with straight-set wins at No. 1, No. 4 and No. 6, and gained a three-set win from Thomas over Nolan at the No. 3 spot (7-5, 2-6, 6-1). Michigan senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) tallied a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Michaela Havelkova at the No. 3 spot, and sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) posted a 6-1, 6-4 win against Howard at No. 5 for the Wolverines' two team points.
The Wolverines return home for the annual battle against Michigan State Friday evening (March 30, 6 p.m.) at the Varsity Tennis Center. U-M puts a 13-match winning streak against the Spartans on the line, and looks for its 30th victory all-time vs. MSU (Wolverines lead the series 29-15).
