Singles Sweep Helps Michigan Trounce Michigan State

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- In a battle for in-state bragging rights, the University of Michigan women's tennis squad posted a 7-0 shutout victory over Michigan State Friday night (March 30) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (7-7, 2-3 Big Ten) won two of the three doubles matches to gain the team point, then dominated all six singles contests in straight-set fashion.
Michigan won the doubles point with a pair of convincing victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, but Michigan State claimed a win at the top doubles spot. Freshmen Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) and Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) won a commanding 8-1 match over Christee Chargot and Josie Schmude at No. 3 to get things rolling for the Wolverines. Junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) and sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) clinched the team point with an 8-2 victory at No. 2 over Mollie Hood and Natasha Skogerboe. The Spartans kept Michigan from a sweep as Caroline Lay and Trine Lise Juliussen won a 9-8 match at No. 1 (tallied a 7-4 victory in the tie-breaker).
In singles, the Wolverines swept all six singles matches to complete the shutout. Senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) and Vaughn collected their 15th singles wins of the season with straight-set wins at the No. 3 and No. 4 spots, respectively. Tipirneni, Nolan, sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) and senior Alison Sinclair (Lakeland, Fla./George Jenkins HS) added straight-set victories to close out the shutout for Michigan.
The Wolverines will have eight days off before traveling to Columbus, Ohio, for a Saturday morning (April 7, 10 a.m.) match against Ohio State at the Stickney Tennis Center. Michigan then heads to State College, Pa., for a Sunday morning (April 8, 11 a.m) matchup with Penn State at the Sarni Tennis Center.
