Michigan Defeats Wisconsin, Earns First Big Ten Win

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team claimed its first Big Ten Conference dual match win of the season Friday afternoon (March 23), beating Wisconsin 6-1 at the Nielsen Tennis Stadium. The Wolverines (6-6) have won three straight matches and reached the .500 mark for the first time since opening the season 3-0.
U-M gained a 1-0 advantage in the match by winning two of the three doubles contests. The Badgers gained the victory at No. 1 as April Gabler and Katie Dougherty claimed an 8-5 win over senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) and freshman Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS). The Wolverines' pairing of sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) earned an 8-5 victory at No. 2. The doubles point came down to a tie-break at No. 3, with freshmen Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) and Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) posting a 7-3 win in the tie-breaker (9-8 match score).
The Wolverines carried the momentum into singles, winning five of the six matches to claim the team win. Nolan, Fuzesi and sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) claimed straight-set victories, while Tipirneni and Duprez won three-set matches. The Badgers' only point came at the No. 4 spot as Linde Mues posted a three-set win over Vaughn (6-3, 1-6, 6-4).
Michigan completes its weekend road trip against Minnesota Sunday morning (March 25, 10 a.m. CST) at the 98th Street Racquet Club in Minneapolis.
