Thompson Just Misses National Title as NCAAs Begin

COLLEGE STATION, Texas -- The ninth-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team is in 10th place with 47 points after the first day of competition Thursday (March 22) at the NCAA Championships at the Student Recreation Center Natatorium. U-M turned in three All-America performances in the 500-yard freestyle with Chris Thompson (Roseburg, Ore./Roseburg HS) missing the national title by four one-hundreths of a second.
In the 500-yard freestyle the Maize and Blue finished 2-5-7 with Thompson coming in second (4:14.71) behind Southern Cal's Klete Keller (4:14.67). Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) turned in a fifth-place performance (4:18.09), while freshman Dan Ketchum (Cincinnati, Ohio/Sycamore HS) came in seventh (4:20.10). Thompson's second-place finish earned him his seventh All-America honor, while Siciliano earned his sixth and Ketchum garnered his first.
U-M's 400-yard medley relay team of Jordan Watland (Excelsior, Minn./Minnetonka HS), Scott Werner (Haymarket, Va./Paul VI HS), Ketchum and Garrett Mangieri (Closter, N.J./Mercersburg Academy Pa.) finished in 15th place (3:16.97) to earn All-America Honorable Mention.
Other Michigan first-day individual competitors included Werner, who finished 36th overall in the 200-yard individual medley, and freshman diver Jason Coben (Newtown Square, Pa./Maple Newtown HS), who took 31st on the one-meter springboard (240.45).
The three-day competition continues Friday (March 23) with the preliminary heats beginning at noon CST and the finals beginning at 7 p.m. CST. Wolverine junior Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS) will be bidding for his third straight NCAA title in the 400 individual medley.
