ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 2-ranked University of Michigan men's gymnastics team defeated No. 6 Michigan State 215.525-215.000 on Friday (March 16) at Crisler Arena. In the first men's gymnastics competition at Crisler Arena since 1998, a crowd of 427 gathered to watch the Wolverines pull out a victory in the final rotation of the last dual meet for Michigan State's program, which is being discontinued after this season.
Leading the Wolverines was junior Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS), who took first in the all-around. Contributing to his total score of 53.650 were a first-place tie on the high bar (9.250) and second on the still rings (9.500). Fellow junior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) was the only other Wolverine to compete in the all-around and finished third with a 51.650.
Sophomore Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) completed the night with a first-place finish on the high bar (9.250) and two second-place finishes, on the floor exercise (9.100) and vault (9.100).
Also producing high marks for Michigan were Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS), Conan Parzuckowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS). Hertza claimed second on the floor exercise (9.100), while Parzuchowski finished second on the still rings. Vetere rounded out the Wolverines' second-place finishes with a 9.525 on the still rings.
Prior to the meet, the Wolverines honored their three seniors -- Jesse Coleman (Canton, Mich./Plymouth Canton HS), Tim Dehr (Burr Rudge, Ill./Hinsdale Central HS) and Kenny Keener (Maryville, Tenn./Maryville HS). All three seniors have been integral pieces of the Michigan team. Fellow seniors Kevin Roulston (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township HS) and Justin Toman (Wallingford, Conn./Lyman Hall HS) are both red-shirting and will rejoin the team for the 2002 season.
The Wolverines return to action next weekend (March 23-24) at the Big Ten Conference Championships in State College, Pa., where they will go after their third straight Big Ten Title. Michigan returns three Big Ten individual event champions, with Vetere (pommel horse, still rings, vault, all-around), Zimmerman (parallel bars) and Diaz-Luong (high bar) holding six of the seven Big Ten event titles. The first night of competition starts at 7 p.m. at Rec Hall on the campus of Penn State University.
