U-M Finishes in Second Place at Big Ten Championships

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. -- Led by a third-place all-around finish by junior Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS), the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team finished second at the Big Ten Conference Championships team finals on Friday (March 23) at Penn State's Rec Hall. The No. 2-ranked Wolverines scored a 216.000 but were denied a third straight Big Ten title by No. 4 Ohio State (217.275).
Michigan faced the other six Big Ten gymnastics programs, each of which is ranked among the GymInfo Top 25 -- No. 3 Michigan State, No. 4 Ohio State, No. 5 Illinois, No. 7 Iowa, No. 8 Minnesota and No. 9 Penn State.
The Wolverines were led by Diaz-Luong, who took third in the all-around with a score of 54.600. Contributing to his all-around score ware a second-place finish on the horizontal bar (9.450) and a fourth-place finish on the parallel bars (8.850). He also qualified for the individual event finals on the floor exercise (9.200) and the still rings (9.300).
Also earning high marks for Michigan were junior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS), who scored a 9.200 to tie for third on the vault and tied for fourth on the floor with a 9.300. He also qualified for Saturday's event finals on the horizontal bar with a 8.950.
Junior Scott Vetere (Pennsburg, Pa./Quakertown HS) finished second on the parallel bars (9.150) and in third place on the still rings (9.550). Sophomore Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) finished in seventh place in the all-around (52.600) and sixth on floor exercise (9.200). Sophomores Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich/West Bloomfield HS) and Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) both qualified for the finals, Hertza on the floor exercise (9.200) and Parzuchowski on the still rings (9.300).
Michigan posted the highest team score on the floor exercise (36.900) and the second highest score on the still rings (37.150). The Wolverines qualified six gymnasts into Saturday night's (March 24) individual event finals with a total of 13 routines. Action begins at 7 p.m. at Rec Hall.
