Wolverines Fall at San Diego on Spring Break Trip

SAN DIEGO, Calif. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team suffered a 4-3 loss to San Diego on Thursday (March 1) in its only match during the spring break trip. The Wolverines (3-5) lost their fifth straight match and first of the season outdoors. The match was scheduled for Feb. 28 but was postponed a day due to rain.
Michigan won the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, while San Diego earned an 8-6 win at the top slot. Sophomore Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) and junior Jen Vaughn (Jefferson City, Mo./Lawrence HS) posted a 9-8 victory over Belinda Kelly and Catherine Heppell at the No. 2 spot, winning the match 7-3 in the tie-breaker. The Wolverines' other victory came as freshmen Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) won 9-7 at No. 3 over Paola Arrangoiz and Stacie Lee.
The Toreros stormed back in singles to win the match, claiming victories in four of the six singles contests. The Wolverines' lone win came at the No. 4 and No. 6 spots. Senior Szandra Fuzesi (Budapest, Hungary/Balassi Balint Gimnazium) earned a 6-4, 6-2 win at No. 4, and sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) posted a hard-fought, three-set victory at No. 6 (6-1, 6-7, 7-6).
The Wolverines return to action on Wednesday (March 10) against regional opponent Notre Dame. The match against the Fighting Irish will begin at 11 a.m. at the Atkins Tennis Center in South Bend, Ind.
