LONG BEACH, Calif. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team narrowly fell to No. 7 Long Beach State 7-6 on Tuesday (Feb. 27) at the LBSU Campus Pool. The Wolverines had the potential game-tying shot blocked by Long Beach State's goaltender as time expired.
The Wolverines (6-7-1) received scoring from five different players, including two goals from junior Mandi Hagedorn (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS). Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS), Delia Sonda (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS), Megan Hayes (Menlo Park, Calif./St. Francis HS) and Rachel Burkons (Van Nuys, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS) also contributed goals.
Long Beach State got on the board first and the two teams continued to trade goals until the end of the third period when the 49ers delivered three goals in a row, putting them up 6-3. Michigan answered with two goals of its own and Burkons found the net with 1:38 left to bring the Wolverines to within 7-6.
The Wolverines return to action tomorrow (Wednesday, Feb. 28) when they close their weeklong California excursion with a doubleheader against No. 16 San Diego State and No. 11 Cal-San Diego. The matchup against SDSU will take place at 2 p.m. CST at the Bud Kearns Pool in San Diego, while the UCSD game will start at 6 p.m. CST at the Canyonview Pool in La Jolla, Calif.
