ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team dropped its third straight match, losing a close 4-3 decision to No. 32-ranked Minnesota Saturday afternoon (Feb. 24) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The No. 35-ranked Wolverines (5-3, 0-2 Big Ten) lost their second straight home match as they split the six singles matches with the Golden Gophers (7-4, 3-0 Big Ten) and dropped the doubles point for just the second time this year.
Minnesota claimed the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots. Michigan kept the Golden Gophers from a doubles sweep with an 8-6 victory by junior Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and sophomore Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) at the No. 1 spot.
Michigan jumped back into the match with three straight-set singles wins but fell just short of victory as the Golden Gophers claimed straight-set victories at No. 3 and No. 4 and a three-set win at No. 6. Beam, ranked 85th nationally in singles, posted an impressive 7-6, 6-4 victory over No. 34-ranked Harsh Mankad.
