SANTA BARBARA, Calif. -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan women's water polo team split a pair of games Saturday (Feb. 24) on the opening day of the Gaucho Tournament, hosted by the University of California-Santa Barbara. The Wolverines fell 17-2 to No. 3 Southern Cal before defeating No. 10 Cal-San Diego 9-8 in overtime at the Recreation Center Pool.
Against Southern Cal in the first game of the morning for the two teams, the Wolverines received two first-period goals from freshman Julie Nisbet (Santa Barbara, Calif./Santa Barbara HS). The Trojans, national runners-up in 2000, pounded the ball into the net 17 times and shut out Michigan for the remainder of the game.
The Wolverines regrouped to defeat Cal-San Diego as six Wolverines scored during the 28 minutes of regulation play, including Mandi Hagedorn (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron HS) and Rachel Burkons (Van Nuys, Calif./Harvard Westlake HS), who notched two goals apiece. Nisbet once again stepped up for the Wolverines, hitting the game-winner in the first three-minute overtime period.
Michigan (5-5-1) will return to Gaucho Tournament action Sunday (Feb. 25) with a 10:20 a.m. PST matchup against No. 11-ranked Cal-Davis at the Recreation Center Pool. A win would put the Wolverines in the ninth-place game (4:10 p.m.), while a loss would having U-M playing for 11th place (3 p.m.). U-M will face either No. 16 San Diego State or No. 17 Princeton in the final round.
