BLOOMINGTON, Ind. -- University of Michigan senior Jennifer Crisman (Hudsonville, Mich./Jenison HS) won her fourth straight 100-yard backstroke conference title, but the Wolverine women's swimming and diving team slipped a spot to second place on Friday (Feb. 16), the second day of the Big Ten Conference Championships.
The No. 16-ranked Wolverines, seeking their 13th Big Ten title, have 403 points after 14 events and trail leader Penn State (413) by 10 points. The Nittany Lions, who have finished no higher than fourth at the league meet since joining the Big Ten in 1991-92, amassed 246 points on Friday and jumped from third place into the lead. Penn State and Michigan have separated from the rest of the pack, with host Indiana (315) a distant third.
Crisman won the 100-yard backstroke with an NCAA automatic qualifying time of 53.99, becoming just the eighth swimmer in Big Ten Championships history to win the same event four consecutive years. Crisman also led a 2-3 Wolverine finish in the 100-yard butterfly (54.84), with Annie Weilbacher (Columbus, Ohio/St. Francis de Sales HS) right behind her in third (54.87).
Samantha Arsenault (Peabody, Mass./Gardner HS) took second in the 200-yard freestyle with an NCAA consideration time of 1:47.62, while Traci Valasco (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) had a third-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:03.22, also an NCAA consideration time.
The 800-yard freestyle relay team of Arsenault, Missy Sugar (Newburgh, Ind./Evansville Day School), Emily Fenn (Westport, Conn./Staples HS) and Sara Johnson (West Bloomfield, Mich./Lahser HS) finished second to Wisconsin in an NCAA consideration time of 7:19.57.
In the three-meter diving event, Tealin Kelemen (Riverton, N.J./Moorestown Friends School) finished in the sixth spot with a score of 468.50. Kelemen's finish is the Wolverines' highest in a Big Ten Championships springboard event since 1996, when Carrie Zarse placed second in the one-meter competition and third on the three-meter board.
The three-day event concludes Saturday (Feb. 17), with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m. and finals at 7 p.m. Complete results are available at Indiana's site.
