Zimmerman Takes Sixth in Winter Cup All-Around Finals

LAS VEGAS, Nev. -- Sophomore Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) finished sixth in the all-around finals of the Winter Cup Challenge on Saturday (Feb 10), leading a trio of competitors from the the University of Michigan men's gymnastics team at the USA Gymnastics-sponsored event.
Zimmerman scored 8.300 or above in all six events for a total score of 51.450 and finished two places away from earning one of the three U.S. National Team spots that were up for grabs (winner Blaine Wilson was already a team member). Zimmerman finished in fifth place on vault (9.000), sixth on high bar (8.600), and ninth on both pommel horse (8.300) and still rings (8.700).
Joining Zimmerman in the all-around finals were juniors Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS) and Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS). Diaz-Luong finished 17th with a 47.875, including a second-place finish on the pommel horse (8.650). Kenna finished 21st overall with a score of 47.375 and had three top-10 event finishes -- seventh on the rings (8.85), third on vault (9.075) and 10th on parallel bars (8.5).
The entire Michigan team, ranked No. 2 nationally, returns to action on Sunday (Feb. 18) when the Wolverines host top-ranked Oklahoma and No. 10 Massachusetts at 1 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
