Helminen, who is tied for the scoring lead among U-M freshmen with 6-3-9, netted a power-play goal in each game of last weekend's sweep of the Bulldogs and posted 2-1-3 during the weekend, while extending his goal-scoring streak to a season-high three games.
Cammalleri and Helminen are the second U-M duo in school history to earn CCHA awards in the same week, joining Jeff Jillson and Josh Langfeld, who copped CCHA Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week honors, respectively, on Oct. 23, 2000. The CCHA began selecting three Players of the Week (Offensive, Defensive and Rookie) in 1998-99 after picking one recipient in each of the previous seasons.
With the awards, a Wolverine has received a CCHA honor following each of the last three weekends, marking the fourth time in school history Michigan has been honored by the league in three straight weeks. Freshman forward Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) was named CCHA Rookie of the Week on Nov. 19 to start the string, while sophomore defenseman Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) earned CCHA Defensive Player of the Week honors last week following the College Hockey Showcase. Overall, five U-M skaters have received a CCHA Player of the Week award this season.
Michigan (8-5-2, 6-3-2 CCHA), ranked 11th in the latest USA Today/American Hockey Magazine Men's College Hockey Poll (Dec. 3), hits the road for the final time in the first half of the 2001-02 campaign this weekend, traveling to Oxford, Ohio, on Friday and Saturday (Dec. 7-8) for a two-game CCHA series with the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks. Opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 p.m. on both nights at Goggin Ice Arena.
