ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's gymnastics team kicked off its 2001-02 campaign with the annual Maize and Blue Intrasquad Meet on Saturday (Dec. 15) at Cliff Keen Arena. In a closely fought battle, the Maize squad edged out the Blue team 158.75-156.15.
Leading the way for the Maize team were juniors Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) and Jamie Hertza (West Bloomfield, Mich./West Bloomfield HS). Zimmerman captured four titles -- the floor exercise (9.300), parallel bars (8.900), horizontal bar (9.400) and the all-around (53.800) -- and took second place on the still rings (9.100) and the vault (9.100).
Hertza tied for first on the pommel horse with a score of 9.500. He also placed second on the horizontal bar (8.600) and third on the floor exercise (9.100).
Competing for the Blue team, senior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) and freshman Edward Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS) received second- and third-place honors, respectively, in the all-around (51.60, 51.50). Kenna tied for first place on the parallel bars with a score of 8.900 and tied for third on the floor exercise (9.100) and the vault (9.100).
Umphrey won the vault title with an impressive 9.400. He also took second on the floor exercise with a 9.200.
The Maize team also received a great all-around performance from sophomore Chris Gatti (Chelmsford, Mass./Chelmsford HS), who took fourth place in the all-around with a score of 51.05. Contributing to his all-around finish were two third-place finishes, on the still rings (8.800) and the horizontal bar (8.500).
The other Blue contributors were junior Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and senior Daniel Diaz-Luong (Harrisburg, Pa./Bishop McDevitt HS). Parzuchowski showed amazing strength on his way to a first-place showing on the still rings (9.550). Diaz-Luong tied for first on the pommel horse with a 9.500 score.
The Wolverines will open their season at the Windy City Invitational on Saturday, Jan. 13, at 7 p.m. CST in Chicago, Ill.
