Wolverines Capture Third at Windy City Invitational

CHICAGO -- Led by juniors Kris Zimmerman (Winnetka, Ill./New Trier HS) and Conan Parzuchowski (Northville, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and freshman Edward Umphrey (Albuquerque, N.M./La Cueva HS), the Michigan men's gymnastics team captured third place at the Windy City Invitational, hosted by the University of Illinois-Chicago on Saturday (Jan. 12).
Michigan, ranked No. 2 in the GymInfo preseason coaches poll, finished with a team score of 206.850 in its season opener to place third behind No. 7-ranked Iowa (207.650) and No. 5 Illinois (207.175). No. 3 Ohio State, No. 8 Minnesota and No. 15 Illinois-Chicago rounded out the strong field.
Zimmerman captured the all-around title with a 51.400 total. He is the first Wolverine to win the all-around at the Windy City Invitational in the 32-year history of the event. Contributing to Zimmerman's score were a second-place finish on the horizontal bar (9.200) and a third-place finish on the floor exercise (9.000).
Parzuchowski recieved first place on the still rings with a 9.200. He also competed on the floor exercise (8.550) and the vault (8.700).
Umphrey was crowned the champion on the floor exercise with a score of 9.150. Senior Brad Kenna (Barberton, Ohio/Walsh Jesuit HS) finished right behind Umphrey in second place with a 9.050, enabling the Wolverines to sweep the top three spots on the floor exercise and post the highest team score in the event (35.900).
The Wolverines return to action next weekend in their home opener when they host Minnesota on Saturday (Jan. 19) at 7:30 p.m. in Cliff Keen Arena.
