Wolverines Still Eighth After Second Day of Texas Invite

AUSTIN, Texas -- The No. 9-ranked University of Michigan men's swimming and diving team remained in eighth place at the Texas Invitational with 177 points after the second day of competition Saturday (Dec. 1). Defending national champion Texas leads the 13-team field at the Lee and Joe Jamail Swim Center with 436 points, followed by Arizona State in second place (373.5) and California in third (332.5).

Mangieri and Ketchum also earned NCAA consideration times in the 200-yard freestyle. Mangieri placed eighth and Ketchum was 11th, both with times of 1:38.67, and both had slightly faster times in the prelims, at 1:38.32 and 1:38.62, respectively.
The other member of the Michigan team to earn an NCAA consideration time was junior All-American Jeff Hopwood (Palo Alto, Calif./Palo Alto HS), who swam a time of 55.91 in the 100-yard breaststroke prelims. Hopwood advanced to the final and finished eighth with a time of 56.39.
In the 400-yard individual medley, the Wolverines had three of the top 13 finishers, led by freshman Chuck Sayao (Mississauga, Ontario/Cawthra Park HS), who placed seventh in 3:56.11 after a faster time (3:54.96) in prelims. Mallory placed 11th (3:54.70) and senior Tim Siciliano (San Marcos, Calif./San Marcos HS), three-time NCAA champion in the 400 IM, finished 13th (3:55.28).
The final day of competition of the Texas Invitational will occur on Sunday (Dec. 2) with the prelims beginning at 9:30 a.m. CST and the finals at 3 p.m. CST.
