Michigan Shut Out by Ohio State in Big Ten Semifinals
11/3/2001 12:00:00 AM | Field Hockey
EVANSTON, Ill. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team had its hopes for a third consecutive Big Ten Tournament title dashed as it fell to the No. 9-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes by a score of 3-0 in a Big Ten Tournament semifinal Saturday (Nov. 3) at Lakeside Field. Ohio State, which beat U-M 2-1 during the regular season (Oct. 12) in Columbus, Ohio, opened up the game with three goals in the first half and the Wolverines were unable to muster enough offense to overcome the deficit.
Vanessa Immordino, No. 2-seeded Ohio State's co-leading scorer with 31 points, opened up the scoring in the game with a goal on a penalty stroke that beat Michigan goaltender Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) 9:44 into the first half. Immordino added a helper on the next OSU goal by Jenee Doto with 13:21 left in the half. Marije van Nouhuys, OSU's other co-leading scorer, finished the scoring for the half with an unassisted marker two and a half minutes later to give the Buckeyes a 3-0 lead heading into halftime.
The No. 3-seeded Wolverines put plenty of pressure on the OSU defense and goaltender Allison Blanton as they took 15 shots on the day, eight of which were on goal. Unfortunately, Michigan was unable to put any balls into the Ohio State cage. The Buckeyes had eight shot attempts with only three shots on goal. Michigan also had the advantage on penalty corners by a margin of 12-6.
Ohio State will face No. 4 seed Iowa in Sunday's championship game at 1 p.m. CST with an automatic NCAA Tournament berth at stake. The Hawkeyes were a 3-2, double-overtime winner over top-seeded Michigan State in the first semifinal Saturday.
U-M will now hope for an at-large bid to the 16-team NCAA Tournament, which begins with regional play on Saturday and Sunday (Nov. 10-11) at four campus sites. The NCAA selection show will be available on the NCAA Championships site on Tuesday (Nov. 6) at 8 p.m. EST.
