In the community, Jackson is a member of the Ypsilanti Free Methodist Church where he regularly speaks and serves as a church greeter. He is also a board member of Wolverine Human Services, a foundation that helps underprivileged children in the state of Michigan.
In his 10th season as a member of the Michigan coaching staff, Jackson is in his fifth season as assistant head coach. His first season as assistant head coach was 1997, when the Wolverines claimed the national championship with a 12-0 record. Michigan has won three Big Ten titles in his five years as assistant head coach and has compiled a 7-2 record in bowl games (the two losses were by a combined five points) since Jackson joined the staff. He is in his 23rd year of college coaching and has also served on staffs at Toledo, Wisconsin, Navy, South Carolina, Purdue and Vanderbilt.
The AFCA began presenting the Assistant Coach of the Year award in 1997 to honor assistant coaches who excel in community service, commitment to the student-athlete, on-field coaching success and AFCA professional organization involvement.
