This Week
The No. 20-ranked University of Michigan women's soccer team received an at-large bid to compete for the 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup. Michigan will face host Marquette University on Friday (Nov. 16) at 7:30 p.m. CST at Valley Fields in Milwaukee, Wis. The winner of that match will face the winner of the Dartmouth/Wisconsin-Milwaukee game on Sunday (Nov. 18) at 1 p.m. CST.
Scouting the Opponents
Marquette -- The Golden Eagles (16-5, 8-2 Conference USA) finished the season as conference runner-up after winning back-to-back titles in 1999 and 2000. This will be the first meeting between Marquette and Michigan. Forward Kate Gordon leads the Golden Eagles attach with nine goals and four assists for 22 points. They are coached by Markus Roeders, who is 97-28-10 in his sixth year as head coach. This is the third straight NCAA Touranment appearance for the Golden Eagles and the second year in a row that MU has hosted first-round action. Marquette is 2-2 in NCAA Tournament action. Dartmouth -- The Big Green (9-4-1, 5-1-1 Ivy League) tied for first place in the Ivy League with Pennsylvania University and Princeton University. Forward Mary McVeigh leads the Big Green this season with five goals and eight assists for 18 points. They are coached by Erica Walsh, who is 23-9-1 in her second season as head coach. Dartmouth is making its fourth straight NCAA Tournament appearance and its seventh overall. The Big Green have a 4-6 record in NCAA Tournament play. Wisconsin-Milwaukee -- The Panthers (15-4, 6-0 Horizon League) won their second league championship (formerly the Midwestern Collegiate Conference) with a 1-0 triple-overtime victory over Butler on Saturday (Nov. 11). The Panthers did not allow a single goal by league opponents this season. UWM and U-M met for the first time last season in Ann Arbor with the Wolverines winning 3-2. Leading the team in scoring this season is Amy Oechsner, who has seven goals and six assists for 20 points. Head coach Michael Moynihan is 60-36-11 in his fifth season at UWM. Wisconsin-Milwaukee's only other conference championship and NCAA Tournament appearance was in 1997, when its lost 2-1 at Minnesota in the NCAA first round. UWM on the Internet: www.uwmpanthers.com.
Michigan's History in the NCAA Tournament
This is the fifth consecutive year that the Wolverines have made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Michigan lost in the first round in 1997 but advanced to the second round in 1998, '99 and 2000. Last season the Wolverines defeated Miami (Ohio) 4-3 in double overtime before losing 3-1 at No. 1 Notre Dame. In 1999, U-M beat Wright State 5-0 in the first round but dropped a close 1-0 match at No. 15 Wake Forest. U-M's first second-round appearance came in 1998, when it lost 3-0 at No. 4 Notre Dame after beating Xavier 4-2 in first-round action. The Wolverines are 3-4 in NCAA Tournament play (3-0 at home, 0-4 away).
The Field
The first four rounds of the 64-team NCAA Tournament will take place on campus sites, with the semifinals and championship game (Dec. 7-9) of the Women's College Cup being held at Southern Methodist University's Gerald J. Ford Stadium in Dallas, Texas. This is the first year for the 64-team format, compared to the 48-team field in previous years. The new format has limited the number of schools that host first- and second-round action to 16 schools, compared to the 48-team format, which allowed for 32 host schools (16 in the first round, 16 who received first-round byes in the second round).
Last Week
The Wolverines competed in the Big Ten Tournament in West Lafayette, Ind., (Nov. 8-11) on Purdue University's campus where they went 1-1 with a 2-0 first-round win over Michigan State and a 2-1 (OT) semifinal loss to Illinois.
In the first round against Michigan State, junior Amy Sullivant (Utica, Mich./Eisenhower HS) was in on both goals for the Wolverines in their 2-0 win over the Spartans as she assisted on Abby Crumpton's (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) game-winner at 86:45 and added a goal of her own with a minute remaining.
In the semifinals against Illinois, Crumpton scored U-M's only goal to tie the game at 1-1 early in the first half. Both teams played a scoreless second half and headed to overtime for the second time this season. Illinois scored with 19 seconds remaining to advance to the title game.

Big Ten Wolverines
Four members of this year's squad received Big Ten honors at the annual tournament banquet on Thursday (Nov. 8) in West Lafayette, Ind. Junior defender Amy Sullivant and junior forward Abby Crumpton received All-Big Ten first team honors for the second time, while junior midfielder Carly Williamson (Barrington, R.I./Barrington HS) and sophomore goalkeeper Suzie Grech (Narbeth, Pa./The Shipley School) were named to the All-Big Ten second team. Sullivant was named to the first team last season, while Crumpton was name to the first team in 1999 before making the All-Big Ten second team as a sophomore.
Big Ten Tournament Wolverine
Abby Crumpton was named to the Big Ten All-Tournament team after scoring a goal in each of the Wolverines' tournament matches. Crumpton was also picked for the Big Ten All-Tournament team in 2000.
Common Opponents
Marquette and Michigan had four common opponents this season -- Oakland, Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin -- with the Golden Eagles going 3-1 and the Wolverines posting a 2-2-1 record against those teams.

Five and Counting
Abby Crumpton is on a five-game goal-scoring streak, the longest of her career. The streak began during U-M's match against Michigan State (Oct. 26). Crumpton leads the team with 12 goals and four assists for 28 points.
Suzie Shutout
Suzie Grech recorded her 10th shutout of the season, in U-M's 2-0 blanking of Michigan State (Nov. 8) in the first round of the Big Ten Tournament, extending her single-season shutout record. The win was Michigan's 11th shutout of the season, tying the school's single-season shutout record (11, 1997).
Big D
Carly Williamson, Andrea Kayal, Amy Sullivant, Vicky Whitley (Spring Texas/Klein HS), Michele Pesiri (New Hyde Park, N.Y./Sacred Heart HS) and Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) have all contributed in the backfield, limiting opponents to just 237 shots and 109 shots on goal.
Time is on Her Side
Suzie Grech went 631:89 over eight games without allowing a goal, from the Penn State game (Oct. 7) until Illinois' game-winner late in overtime in the Big Ten Tournament semifinal game against the Wolverines (Nov. 9). Grech's longest previous scoreless streak was 403:41, which began at Iowa (Sept. 23) and was halted at Penn State (Oct. 7).
In the Record Books on U-M Soccer Field
Michigan set a new record for home wins in a season (nine in 10 games) with its 2-0 shutout over Western Michigan (Nov. 3). The Wolverines reached eight wins at home in 1999 when they were 8-1 and in '97 when they finished with an 8-0 record at the U-M Soccer Field.
Miss Assist
Amy Sullivant leads the Wolverines with seven assists, tying her for ninth on the all-time assist list. Heading into this season, Sullivant had only recorded two assists, both in 1999.
Fourth All-Time
Abby Crumpton's 12 goals this season give her 31 for her career, putting her in a tie for fourth on Michigan's all-time goals list. She is one goal away from tying Ruth Poulin (1994-97), who finished her career with 32 goals. Kacy Beitel (1997-2000) holds the career record with 44.
Playoff Peterson
Senior defender/midfielder Laurie Peterson (Del Mar, Calif./Torrey Pines HS) is at her best in NCAA Tournament action, having recorded six points in six games. Against Xavier in 1998 Peterson tied the game with a goal late in the first half, and in 1999 Peterson recorded two assists to lead U-M over Wright State 5-0. Last season, Peterson recorded her second NCAA goal in first-round action against Miami (Ohio).
Veteran Contributions
Andrea Kayal (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills HS) will help lead the Wolverines this postseason as she had assists against Miami (Ohio) and Notre Dame last season in first- and second-round action. Alissa Shaw (West Carrollton, Ohio/West Carrollton HS) is also experienced in the postseason as she recorded the game-winner against Xavier in first-round action in 1998.
Baby Bits
Head coach Debbie Rademacher and her husband, Rob, gave birth to their first child, Luke Joseph (5 pounds, 4 ounces), at 7:59 p.m. on Wednesday (Oct. 31).
World Cup Qualifier
Suzie Grech recently traveled with the Spanish National Team to Moscow, Russia, for one of six World Cup qualifying matches. Spain was shut out by the Russians 2-0 (Oct. 28). Grech faced 10 shots and made four saves in the match. Grech's performance was her ninth with the Spain National Team and the second of six games that she will play in net for them.

Michigan's remains at No. 20 spot in the latest NSCAA coaches poll (Nov. 12), marking the fifth consecutive week the Wolverines have been ranked. Also ranked from the Big Ten are No. 7 Penn State and No. 24 Illinois.
