Michigan State Defeats Kent State in NCAA First Round
ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 7-ranked Michigan State field hockey team defeated No. 11 Kent State by a count of 3-1 on Saturday (Nov. 10) in an NCAA Tournament first-round contest at the University of Michigan's Ocker Field. MSU, making its NCAA debut, rallied from a 1-0 deficit to score three unanswered goals in the last 25 minutes of play for the victory.
The first half was a defensive struggle as neither team was able to muster much offensively. Michigan State took three shots in the half and Kent State took one. The only shot to reach either goalkeeper was Kent State's, which was stopped. Michigan State out-cornered Kent State 4-2 in the half.
The second half of the game saw both teams come to life, with the Golden Flashes being the first to break through. With 23:45 remaining, Kent State's Kristen Johnson was able to tip home a shot off of a corner by Helen Jedan to put KSU up 1-0. That shot, however, would end up being the only one that Kent State took the entire half.
The Spartans mounted their comeback with a goal just two minutes after Kent State's at 21:56. MSU's Maureen Halstead received a centering pass from Julia Adams in front of the net and she was able to spin around and score from point-blank range. Michigan State's next goal came at 14:49 off of a tip from a corner shot. Alexandra Kyser tipped the shot by Annebet Beerman up into the cage for what would be the game-winning goal.
MSU closed the door on the game at 6:34 with its third goal. Again, Halstead received a pass from Adams, and she was able to stuff the ball into the goal from close range.
Kent State goalkeeper Jodi Lume had three saves on the afternoon while Michigan State's Lauren Hess made one save. Michigan State's pressure in the second half was the difference in the game as the Spartans outshot Kent State 9-1 and out-cornered the Golden Flashes 7-3.
Michigan State now moves on to the second round the NCAA Tournament to face Michigan, which defeated North Carolina 5-2 in today's first contest, at 2 p.m. Sunday (Nov. 11) at Ocker Field. The Wolverines won the regular-season meeting between the two schools, prevailing 2-1 in overtime Oct. 4 in East Lansing, Mich.

Q U O T E S
Kent State Head Coach Kerry DeVries
On her thoughts on the game ... "It was a very evenly matched game for the first 75 percent of the game. Then Michigan State made the most of their chances inside the attacking circle. I thought Michigan State played a nice passing game out and around. I thought (MSU's) Sophie Rosmalen was, hands down, the best player in the game today. I thought she was outstanding. I knew she was a feisty, hard-working center midfielder, but I thought she was outstanding today. I wish them good luck in the tournament."
Michigan State Head Coach Michele Madison
On how Kent State played today compared to the regular-season meeting ... "It was about the same type of game. They're very hungry, they're very forward. They play a straight-up-the-field game with a lot of big balls. We had a lot of tips and loose balls in the midfield. In the second half, we really tried to jump on those because we only had about half of them in the first half, so in the second half we said we have to get the second touch after the initial deflection. The girls really did it."
On the defense's ability to hold down Kent State's offense ... "Well, we know that Arlette van Cleeff is a very strong attacker. We had Alexandra Kyser, one of our best defenders, on her and just tried to wear her down a little until she got a little tired trying to get away from Kyser. I felt Kyser played a great defensive game on her. Everyone was covering for Kyser while she went for the balls that they were trying to feed to van Cleeff."
On Michigan State's attack ... "Attackwise, we were just trying to look for the space, and in the second half we were able to find it and that's how we were able to get into the circle."
On Michigan's play in Saturday's first game ... "It was a great display of attack. Michigan is so dangerous. I'm so happy for them. If somebody had to win, I wanted it to be somebody from Michigan. (Michigan head coach) Marcia Pankratz and I talked about it that we wanted to play and that we wanted to play in the finals. I imagine she's happy for us too."
On looking forward to the rematch ... "At this point, it's always fun to play Michigan. In the tournament, it's just another game, but with it being a rematch it makes it more special. Any game is special when it's against Michigan and it should bring out the best from both teams. I think it should be an exciting game."
