ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team skated to a 3-1 victory over the United States National Team Development Program's Under-18 Team on Tuesday night (Oct. 9) at Yost Ice Arena, wrapping up the exhibition portion of its schedule.
Senior Craig Murray (Penticton, B.C.) opened the scoring for the Wolverines with a goal just 2:18 into the first period. Following a face-off deep in Team USA's zone, freshman Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C) collected the puck in the right corner and threw it into the crease. Junior captain Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) took the initial shot, which was saved by USA goaltender Tim Roth. The rebound was deflected to Murray, who banged a shot past a sprawling Roth.
Just four minutes later, the Wolverines extended their lead on a power-play goal by freshman defenseman Eric Werner (Grosse Pointe Woods, Mich.). The initial shot taken by junior John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) from the left point was deflected in the crease off the skate of freshman and Team USA alum Jason Ryznar (Anchorage, Alaska). The puck bounced to Werner, who was standing on the right doorstep, and he flipped it past Roth.
Team USA put itself on the board late in the first period with a goal from defenseman Matthew Carle. The play began in Team USA's defensive zone when Jim McKenzie delivered a feed pass to Brett Sterling breaking just across the red line. Sterling skated the puck around Michigan defenseman Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.) and in on goaltender Kevin O'Malley (Grosse Pointe, Mich.), lifting a shot into O'Malley's pads. The rebound bounced to the left side of the crease, where Carle banged it into an open net.
In the second period, Michigan added an insurance marker with a goal from freshman defenseman Reilly Olson (Grand Prairie, Alberta). Shouneyia dug the puck from out of the left corner and passed it to Olson at the point. Olson took a slap shot that deflected off a USA defenseman and past Roth high on his stick side.
O'Malley faced only 14 shots on goal and made 13 saves while earning the win.
The Wolverines travel to Omaha, Neb., this weekend to participate in the second annual Maverick Stampede. On Friday (Oct. 12), Michigan will face off against sixth-ranked Providence at 5:05 p.m. CDT. Depending on the outcome, Michigan will play host Nebraska-Omaha or Minnesota-Duluth on Saturday (Oct. 13) at 5:05 or 8:05 p.m. CDT.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Red Berenson
On the Under-18 Team ... "I thought they were a good team. They skated well, there were parts of the game I thought they outskated us and outworked us. You can see that all these kids are not out of place playing against (NCAA) Division I players and most of those kids will be Division I players next year. There's a lot of talent on that team, so as much as we didn't have six of our regular players playing, it was all we could do to keep the puck out of the net and make sure we didn't lose the game. It was a good contest. We play this game for the USA program. I think it's good for their players to play against Division I players and, particularly, a school like Michigan. And, of course, they're right here in Ann Arbor, so you want to support them. It's good for them and it's good for us too, good for our kids. We got a lot of kids in the lineup tonight that maybe won't get those game situations on a regular basis. We got another look at players that haven't even played in a game up until tonight so that was good."
On Michigan's utility players ... "We noticed obviously that he (Kevin O'Malley) was sharp in the Blue/White game. He's improved each year. This year he's shown that he's more than capable of playing so it was a good game for him and a good opportunity for him; he took advantage of it. (Reilly) Olson scored a goal, it's his first game, you can see it's a big jump for him but it was good experience for him. Nick Martens had an honest effort as did Brad Fraser. We're trying to evaluate our players still. It isn't like we know exactly who our top six defensemen are every night so there's definitely some competition and this game gives us a chance to evaluate some players."
Senior Goaltender Kevin O'Malley
On Team USA's goal ... "As soon as stuff started going wrong, all the leaders out there just pretty much stepped up and said something. Although we're at Michigan, you don't just put the jersey on and come out and play. Coach (Red Berenson) said that anyone can beat you any night. It doesn't matter who you play, they're a good team."
