U-M Routs Friars, Advances to Stampede Championship

OMAHA, Neb. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team put on an offensive display in its first non-conference game of the season, downing No. 6 Providence by a 6-3 margin Friday (Oct. 12) in the first semifinal of the Maverick Stampede at the Omaha Civic Auditorium. Twelve different Wolverines notched points in the contest, including goals by six different players, as U-M advanced to Saturday night's championship game against Minnesota-Duluth, a 5-2 winner over No. 13 Nebraska-Omaha in the second semifinal.
The Wolverines (1-0-1) used an early outburst of scoring to set the tone for the game, then answered the Friars (0-1-0) every time they scored. Michigan posted 31 shots to Providence's 17.
Michigan jumped out to a 3-1 lead after the first 20 minutes, including a two-goal lead in the first five minutes of the opening stanza after two markers were scored just 1:04 apart.
Freshman forward Jason Ryznar (Anchorage, Alaska) opened the scoring and put the Wolverines on the board for second straight game, scoring on the power play at 3:41. Senior forward Jed Ortmeyer (Omaha, Neb.) set up the play on the near side, feeding a cross-ice pass to sophomore defenseman Mike Komisarek (Islip Terrace, N.Y.), who took the initial shot, which deflected off a Providence defender. Ryznar skated in from the left corner, grabbed the puck, circled and fired the shot in the slot to beat Friar netminder Nolan Scheafer.
Freshman forward David Moss (Dearborn, Mich.) added to the Wolverines' lead at 4:45 with his first marker, in a four-on-four situation. Moss, on his knees at the top of the left face-off circle, fed the puck to freshman forward Milan Gajic (Burnaby, B.C) at the right edge of the crease, where he put a shot high on Schaefer. The puck caromed off Schaefer's glove to the left side, where Moss picked the puck up and flipped it into an empty net for his first career goal.
The Friars, picked to finish first in Hockey East this season, got on the board just over halfway through the first period, scoring on a shorthanded situation. With both teams skating four aside, Providence's Jon DiSalvatore won a faceoff in U-M's offensive zone and fed the puck back to Jason Platt, who chipped it up along the boards to Doug Wright. With Ortmeyer getting ready to step on the ice to begin a Michigan power play, Wright banked the puck up the boards, avoiding a hit by Komisarek, and found DiSalvatore on the breakaway. DiSalvatore beat senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) on his glove side along the ice to cut the margin to 2-1.
Michigan regained a two-goal led at 17:59 when junior forward John Shouneyia (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) tipped a shot by sophomore forward Joe Kautz (Des Plaines, Ill.) past Schaefer. Kautz picked up the puck in the right faceoff circle from freshman forward Michael Woodford (Westford, Mass.), who fed him off the boards, and from the faceoff dot fired a shot that was tipped by Shouneyia on the right side.
Providence cut the Michigan lead to one 5:42 into the second period when Stephen Wood fired a shot from the right point that beat Blackburn along the ice. The Wolverines responded to score the period's next three goals, taking control of the game with a 6-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Freshman forward Dwight Helminen (Brighton, Mich.) recorded his first career goal and regained U-M's two-goal margin at 9:19 after his shot was pushed into the goal by a Providence defenseman, while freshman forward Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.) made the score 5-2 after he took a rebound from senior defenseman Jay Vancik's (Medina, Ohio) shot, circled around the right faceoff circle, and fired a shot from the high slot that beat Schaefer between the legs.
With less than a minute remaining in the period and the Wolverines on the power play, Ortmeyer notched his first goal of the season and second point of the night, tipping a blast from Komisarek to give U-M a 6-2 advantage heading into the final stanza.
Providence pulled to within three goals 4:54 into the third period when DiSalvatore netted his second of the game, tipping in a shot by Devin Rask underneath Blackburn.
Blackburn made 14 saves in net for the Wolverines, allowing two goals, while Schafer stopped 25 of Michigan's 31 shots. U-M converted on two of its eight power-play attempts and held the Friars scoreless on their six opportunities.
Michigan will now play for the Omaha Cup, awarded annually to the winner of the Maverick Stampede, on Saturday at 8:05 p.m. CDT, taking on Minnesota-Duluth.

Q U O T E S
U-M Head Coach Red Berenson
On the game ... "I thought we got off to a great start, adjusted pretty good, and scored on a couple of chances. After that it was a pretty even game, and we were fortunate because we always scored the go-ahead goal that kept us at a two-goal lead. They were timely goals and it was a more even game than the score indicated."
On the physicality of the game ... "It was a hard-fought game. For Providence, it was essentially their first game, and for us, it was more like our fourth game. They played hard and physical, and they stepped it up a couple of times where (Josh) Blackburn has to be a big factor. The penaly-killing the last half of the game I thought was important too."
On the balanced scoring ... "We got scoring from different guys and different lines and that was important. I think the puck was going in for us. I'm not convinced they were all great goals, but the puck went in at the right time. A lot of the goals were on screened shots, so just getting the puck at the net was important."
