Nolan Wins Second Straight Wolverine Invitational Title

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team concluded its 2001 Wolverine Fall Invitational by winning one singles title and claiming the top spot in the doubles field. Sophomore Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) won the Blue flight singles title for the second straight year, while the freshman duo of Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) and Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) claimed the doubles title.
Nolan posted a 4-0 record at the tournament for the second year in a row and defeated Michigan State's Caroline Lay (7-5, 6-4) in the championship final. Sophomore Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) won the consolation bracket title with a 3-1 record, while Rutherford and DaCosta tallied 2-2 singles marks in their first career event.
In the Maize singles flight, sophomore Kim Plaushines (Oconomowoc, Wis./Kettle Moraine HS) posted a 3-1 record and was the runner-up after losing in the championship final to Michigan State's Dora Vastag by a 6-3, 6-2 score. Junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./Westhampton Beach HS) finished in third place with a 2-1 record.
Rutherford and DaCosta ran to the doubles championship with a 4-0 record and defeated a pair of teammates in both the semifinals and championship matches. The freshmen tallied an 8-6 win over Duprez and Plaushines in the final, while Nolan and Musgrove finished fourth with a 2-2 record after losing to DePaul's Szilvia Kelemen and Marina Parashkevova.
