EAST LANSING, Mich. -- The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team need some extra time and help from freshman forward Adrienne Hortillosa (Chula Vista, Calif./Bonita Vista HS) on Thursday (Oct. 7), but the Wolverines remained perfect in Big Ten Conference play and extended their winning streak to six games with a 2-1 overtime win over No. 7 Michigan State at MSU's Duffy Daugherty Building.
With the win, the Wolverines (9-2, 3-0 Big Ten) remained in a tie for first place with Ohio State and stayed unbeaten in their last 11 conference outings. The Spartans (8-4, 2-1 Big Ten) suffered their first loss in the Big Ten and had a two-game winning streak snapped.
Michigan took the play to the Spartans in the first half, outshooting MSU 5-1 and outcornering them by a 2-0 margin, and carried a 1-0 lead into the break on a goal by sophomore forward April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) with 10:45 left in the opening frame.
The Spartans responded in the final 35 minutes of regulation by outshooting the Wolverines 5-2 and taking eight penalty corner opportunities to U-M's four. Michigan State evened the score with just under seven minutes remaining when Bridget Cooper beat senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) to send the game into overtime.
In the overtime session, Michigan State had five penalty corner attempts to Michigan's three but could not convert. The game-winning goal came off a broken penalty corner attempt, as sophomore defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) faked a shot, then passed it to Hortillosa, who snuck it past Spartan goalkeeper Lauren Hess with just 0:07 remaining for the victory.
Tasch stopped six of the seven shots she faced in the winning effort, while Hess posted five saves while allowing two goals.
Michigan will return home on Sunday (Oct. 7) to host Harvard in a non-conference affair. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at Ocker Field on the U-M campus.
