Wolverines Compete at ITA Regional Championships

MADISON, Wis. -- The University of Michigan women's tennis team completed competition at the 2001 ITA Omni Hotels Midwest Regional Championships yesterday (Monday, Oct. 29) at the University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Center. The Wolverines sent five players into main draw singles competition, three competitors into qualifying singles action and three doubles teams into main draw competition.
Sophomore Chrissie Nolan (Glenview, Ill./Glenbrook South HS) and freshman Leanne Rutherford (Calgary, Alberta/National Sports School) posted 1-1 records in the main draw portion of the singles tournament. Nolan, seeded ninth, defeated Michaela Havelkova of Minnesota in the first round before falling 6-3, 6-4 to Notre Dame's Katie Cunha in the round of 32. Rutherford continued her impressive play, beating Iowa's Pascale Veraverbeke in three sets (6-2, 4-6, 7-6) before dropping a 6-2, 6-3 match to Jessica Rush of Northwestern.
Junior Joanne Musgrove (LaSalle, Ontario/Sandwich HS) advanced to main draw singles action by winning two matches in the qualifier. Musgrove, the top seed in the qualifying draw, beat Valparaiso's Jen Schulte (6-0, 6-0) and Northern Iowa's Jessica Landes (6-1, 6-0) before losing to Anabell Espinsoa of Marquette (6-3, 6-3) in qualifying final. Musgrove lost in the first round of main draw action to finish the tournament with a 2-2 record.
Junior Jen Duprez (Westhampton, N.Y./West Hampton Beach HS) posted a 2-1 record in the qualifying portion of the draw. After falling in the first round of competition, Duprez defeated Ohio State's Meghan Colville (6-1, 6-3) and Marquette's Sommer La Valley (6-1, 6-1) to finish the tournament.
In doubles action, Rutherford and fellow freshman Michelle DaCosta (Huber Heights, Ohio/Wayne HS) posted a pair of victories before falling to top-seeded Becky Varnum and Lindsey Green of Notre Dame. Nolan and sophomore Kavitha Tipirneni (Galloway, Ohio/Hilliard Darby HS) split a pair of matches, with the setback coming in an 8-6 match to second-seeded Rebecca Hawkins and Lisa D'Amelio of Eastern Michigan.
