ROCHESTER, Mich. -- Playing with only 10 men for all but five minutes of the 120-minute match, the University of Michigan men's soccer team received unassisted goals from freshman Mychal Turpin (Pontiac, Mich./University of Detroit Jesuit HS) and sophomore Tom Gritter (Grand Rapids, Mich./Grand Rapids Christian HS) in a 2-2 tie in double overtime at Oakland University Wednesday (Oct. 3).
The Wolverines went a man down at the five-minute mark as Dave George (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) received his second yellow card of the match, causing him to be ejected from the game. He will also miss U-M's next game, against Indiana on Sunday (Oct. 7).
Playing without one of their starting defenders, the Wolverines were able to jump out to an early 1-0 lead as Turpin scored at 12:13. The goal was Turpin's second of the year. Oakland tied the game at 1-1 when Marcus Halland received an Anders Vollen pass and sent it past U-M goalkeeper Joe Zawacki (Livonia, Mich./Livonia Stevenson HS) in the 38th minute.
The Grizzlies (3-2-2) took a 2-1 as Phillip Braathen scored an unassisted goal in the 42nd minute. The two teams left the field at halftime with the score 2-1 in favor of Oakland.
Both teams came out firing in the second half as Oakland had six shots on net and the Wolverines had three. Zawacki stopped all six of shots he faced in the half en route to eight saves on the day. With time winding down, Gritter scored his first goal of the season in the 77th minute, sending the match into overtime with the scored knotted at 2-2.
Gritter's goal moved him ahead of Jody Keeling (Odessa, Fla./Berkeley Preparatory) and Kevin Robinson (Caro, Mich./Faith Baptist HS) for first place on U-M's career goals scored list with five.
In the first overtime the Wolverines outshot Oakland 2-0 but no goals were scored. U-M outshot the Grizzlies 3-0 in the second half, but again the Maize and Blue was kept off the board as the match ended in a 2-2 tie.
Michigan (7-1-1, 1-1 Big Ten) re-enters Big Ten Conference action on Sunday (Oct. 7), when the Wolverines take on the No. 6-ranked Indiana Hoosiers at 2 p.m. on the U-M Soccer Field.
