Michigan Rebounds with 4-0 Blanking of Chippewas

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. -- Wrapping up the non-conference portion of its 2001 campaign, the No. 4-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team posted a 4-0 shutout of Central Michigan on Sunday (Oct. 21) at Kelly/Shorts Stadium on the CMU campus.
The Wolverines improved to 12-4 with the win, which saw senior defender Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School) tie the school record for career assists, recording a pair of helpers in the game.
Michigan took control early in the contest, with sophomore defender Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) scoring 3:28 into the game off a feed from Foreman. The Wolverines took a 2-0 lead into halftime after junior midfielder Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS) netted her second marker of the year with 3:11 remaining in the opening stanza. Rose also picked up an assist in the win, helping redshirt freshman Ashley Chod (Ballwin, Mo./The Whitfield School) give U-M a 3-0 lead with 8:00 to go in the game.
Foreman's record-tying assist, the 56th of her career, came on a goal by sophomore defender Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School), who added Michigan's final marker on a penalty corner situation with 1:47 to go.
Michigan outshot the Chippewas 11-3 and outcornered CMU by a 12-3 margin. Senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) made three saves in the win, while Central's Janel Spero was credited with seven stops.
The Wolverines (12-4, 3-2 Big Ten), tied for third in the Big Ten Conference standings, will conclude the regular season and Big Ten play on Saturday, Oct. 27, traveling to Evanston, Ill., to face the Northwestern Wildcats. Game time is slated for 1 p.m. CDT at Lakeside Field.

N O T E S
Michigan's four goals were the most since scoring five in a 5-1 win at Ball State on Sept. 30. U-M had been held to two goals or less in its previous five outings.
Catherine Foreman tallied her 55th and 56th career assists in the win and is now tied with Courtney Reid (1997-2000) for the Michigan career assists mark.
