KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- The No. 5-ranked University of Michigan ice hockey team suffered its second straight defeat on Friday night (Oct. 19), falling 3-1 at Western Michigan in the opening game of a two-game, home-and-home Central Collegiate Hockey Association series.
Special-teams play and a freshmen netminder were the stories of the evening as the teams combined for 16 power plays and 50 minutes in penalties, while Bronco freshman Mike Mantua stopped 23 of Michigan's 24 shots, including 16 on the power play, for the win.
In the midst of a penalty-filled first period, the Wolverines (1-2-1, 0-1-1 CCHA) grabbed a 1-0 lead 9:08 into the first period, captalizing on their fourth power-play opportunity of the night. Nearing the end of a five-on-three advantage and with Michigan applying constant pressure on the WMU penalty-kill unit, junior forward John Shouneyia (West Bloomfield, Mich.) fed a pass to freshman forward Eric Nystrom (Syosset, N.Y.), who found himself alone in front of the net and beat Mantua along the ice for his second tally of the season.
The Western Michigan offense came alive in the second period, scoring three straight goals to give the Broncos a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes. Dana Lattery tied the contest on the power play 3:41 into the stanza on a slapshot from the high slot that beat senior goaltender Josh Blackburn (Choctaw, Okla.) between the pads along the ice, while Ryan Crane gave Western Michigan (2-1-0, 2-1-0) its first lead of the game at 14:13 with four skaters a side, poking in a rebound at the left post off a shot from Jeff Campbell.
Dave Cousineau expanded the Broncos' margin to two goals with just under 27 second remaining in the period after he took advantage of a three-on-two situation, beating Blackburn stick-side after a cross-ice pass from Paul Davies. Mike Bishai, the leading returning scorer in the CCHA and a second-team All-American a year ago, factored in on all three Western goals and was credited with an assist on each tally.
Michigan found itself shorthanded for six of the first 10 minutes of the third period but still managed quality scoring chances, including three point-blank opportunities during a pair of Bronco power plays. The Wolverines outshot the Broncos 10-6 in the final 20 minutes but could not get the puck past Mantua, who earned Perani Cup First Star honors with 23 saves and the win.
Blackburn stopped 18 shots while suffering his first career loss to Western Michigan.
With the victory, the Broncos snapped a 15-game winless streak against Michigan and posted their first win over the Wolverines since Dec. 9, 1995. In that contest, Western posted a 5-0 triumph in U-M's last loss at Lawson Arena.
Michigan will host Western Michigan on Saturday (Oct. 20) in the finale of the weekend series. Opening faceoff for the Wolverines' home opener is slated for 7:35 p.m. at Yost Ice Arena.
