Blake Nets Winner as Michigan Rebounds to Beat Ohio

ATHENS, Ohio -- A goal by freshman Jessica Blake (Perth, Western Australia/St. Mary's Anglican HS) with 5:40 left in the game lifted the No. 2-ranked University of Michigan field hockey team to a 2-1 victory over No. 12 Ohio on Sunday (Oct. 14) at the Bobcats' Pruitt Field. After being held scoreless for the first 12 games of the year, Blake has netted goals in each of the last two games.
Blake broke the 1-1 tie after taking a penalty corner from senior Catherine Foreman (Happy Valley, South Australia/Westminster School) and sophomore Stephanie Johnson (Houston, Texas/The Kinkaid School) and beating Bobcats goalkeeper Tara Elliott. Blake's game-winning goal came less than five minutes after Ohio's Jenn Watt had tied the game with 10:09 on the clock.
The goal by Blake prevented Michigan from losing consecutive games for the first time this season. After dropping a 2-1 decision to No. 10 Ohio State on Friday, Michigan was able to hold Ohio to six shots on the day as senior goalkeeper Maureen Tasch (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS) posted her 12th game of the season in which she has allowed one goal or less.
Sophomore April Fronzoni (Larksville, Pa./Wyoming Valley West HS) got Michigan on the board in the first period against Ohio by collecting her sixth goal at the 22:43 marker. Fronzoni's goal was set up by sophomore Jen Zangara (Toledo, Ohio/Ottawa Hills HS) and redshirt freshman Ashley Chod (Ballwin, Mo./The Whitfield School).
Michigan's next game will be on Saturday (Oct. 20) when it hosts Penn State at Ocker Field. It will be the last regular-season home match for the Wolverines and is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
