Wolverines Dominate Penn, Improve to 4-0 on Season

PHILADELPHIA -- The eighth-ranked University of Michigan wrestling team won its fourth straight dual with a 26-6 destruction of No. 20-ranked Pennsylvania on Sunday afternoon (Jan. 7) at The Palestra. The Wolverines took eight of the 10 matches at the dual.

The Maize and Blue wheeled off five straight at the beginning of the contest to take a 16-0 lead. Second-ranked heavyweight Matt Brink (Muskegon, Mich./Fruitport HS) started off for U-M, taking a 6-2 decision over Mike Faust.

A.J. Grant (Clarkston, Mich./Clarkston HS) -- ranked No. 4 at 125 -- continued his unbeaten record in dual competition with a 5-2 decision over Lenhard. Foley Dowd (Howell, N.J./Peddie School) scored an 18-6 major decision over Dan Mousetis at 133, Clark Forward (Archbold, Ohio/Archbold HS) decisioned Chris Hanlon, 7-2, and 16th-ranked 149-pounder Mike Kulczycki (N. Royalton, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) put down No. 14-ranked Joe Henson, 12-5.

Charles Martelli (Naperville, Ill./Naperville North HS) took his match at 165 against senior Tim Ortman into overtime after each scored just one escape in regulation. Martelli scored a takedown with 17 seconds remaining in the overtime period to win 3-1, putting Michigan ahead 19-3.

At 174, No. 1-ranked Otto Olson (Everett, Wash./Everett HS) handled senior Tim DeAngelo, scoring a 22-9 major decision to take his record to 14-0 on the season.

Andy Hrovat (Gates Mills, Ohio/St. Edwards HS) was down 6-4 in the first period to Marcus Schontube at 184, but Hrovat scored a pair of takedowns in the second, while both traded takedowns and escapes to tie the match at 9-9 with just seconds on the clock. Hrovat escaped with 0:06 remaining to claim the 10-9 decision. The victory put U-M up 26-3 and finished the meet at 26-6 with Penn taking the last match.

The Wolverines will be back on the mat next weekend for the Wendy's Classic on Sunday (Jan. 14), starting at noon in Ashland, Ohio. The Maize and Blue will compete in duals against Binghamton, Marquette and Cleveland State.
