Jackson Clinches 4-3 Michigan Win Over Green Wave

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis team posted a close 4-3 victory over Tulane today (Saturday, Jan. 27) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines (2-0) won the doubles point with victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 spots, and split the six singles matches with the Green Wave in gaining the 4-3 win.
The team point in doubles came down to a tiebreaker at No. 3, with freshmen Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) and Brett Baudinet (Auckland, New Zealand/King's College) winning on their second match-point opportunity. Jackson and Baudinet won the tiebreaker by a 9-7 score, securing a 9-8 match victory and a 1-0 Michigan lead. The Wolverines' first doubles win came as juniors Danny McCain (Largo, Fla/Canterbury School) and Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) dominated at No. 2, winning 8-1 over Tulane's Derya Rose and Mattias Westerberg.
In singles action, the Wolverines and Green Wave eached claimed three team points. Michigan secured the victory as Jackson won a three-set match at No. 4, beating Jorge Lievano (6-7, 7-6, 6-2). Michigan gained straight-set victories from sophomore Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) at No. 5 and Baudinet at No. 6 to earn the match victory.
Michigan returns to the hardcourt tomorrow (Sunday, Jan. 28) against regional opponent DePaul. The match will be played at the Varsity Tennis Center beginning at noon.
