U-M Opens Dual Match Season with Shutout of Broncos

ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The University of Michigan men's tennis squad opened its 2001 dual match season with an impressive 7-0 victory over cross-state rival Western Michigan this afternoon (Sunday, Jan. 21) at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines swept all three doubles matches to earn the team point, and earned victories in all six singles contests.
Juniors Ben Cox (Spring Lake, Mich./Spring Lake HS) and Danny McCain (Largo, Fla./Canterbury School), sophomore Chris Shaya (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./Saddlebrook Academy, Fla.) and freshman Anthony Jackson (Glendale, Wis./Nicolet HS) won straight-set singles matches. Junior co-captains Henry Beam (Kalamazoo, Mich./Loy Norrix HS) and Greg Novak (Stoney Creek, Ontario/Cardinal Newman HS) finished off the shutout by collecting three-set victories.
Michigan returns to the hartcourt next weekend at the Varsity Tennis Center, hosting Tulane (Saturday, Jan. 27) and DePaul (Sunday, Jan. 28) in noon matches.

N O T E S
-- U-M won its 25th match at the Varsity Tennis Center. The Wolverines have compiled a 25-8 record in the five-year-old facility, and have won 17 of their last 21 matches on the home court. 
-- Michigan has won all five home openers at the Varsity Tennis Center.
-- With today's win, U-M won its ninth consecutive season opener and has claimed victory in 21 of its last 23 season openers. The Wolverines improved to 64-17-1 in season openers dating back to 1921.
