ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The University of Michigan field hockey team bounced back from its first loss of the season by defeating Duke 3-1 on Monday (Sept. 4) in the second day of the Big Ten/ACC Challenge at the Anheuser Busch Sports Center. The Wolverines were led by sophomore Molly Powers (Oak Park, Ill./Oak Park-River Forest HS), who scored twice in the second half.
After a scoreless first half, Michigan came out firing in the second with goals by Courtney Reid (South Deerfield, Mass./Northfield Mount Hermon HS) and Powers. Duke answered with nine minutes remaining, cutting the Wolverine lead to 2-1. Powers, the Maize and Blue's top goal scorer with four, stopped the Blue Devil comeback 30 seconds later on a score set up by Jessica Rose (Lititz, Pa./Warwick HS).
Kristi Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS) helped out on Reid's goal, and her sister, Kelli Gannon (Escondido, Calif./San Pasqual HS), continued her four-game point streak by assisting on Powers' first score.
Freshman goalkeeper Molly Maloney (Lake Bluff, Ill./Lake Forest HS) made five saves in her second career start, boosting her record to 2-0.
The Wolverines return to action on Saturday (Sept. 9) for their home opener against American University at 10 a.m. at Ocker Field.
