Chavez Nets Game-Winner in Double Overtime at Iowa

IOWA CITY, Iowa -- Freshman Stephanie Chavez (Shorewood, Wis./Shorewood HS) scored her fourth goal of the season at 107:37 of double overtime to push the University of Michigan women's soccer team past Iowa by a 3-2 score on Friday (Sept. 29).
The Wolverines struck first as senior Marie Spaccarotella (Livonia, Mich./Churchill HS) scored from five yards out on an Abby Crumpton (Rochester Hills, Mich./Rochester Adams HS) pass at 14:31 of the first half. Freshman Erika Kleinholz (North Ridgeville, Ohio/Elyria Catholic HS) scored her first goal as a Wolverine, off a Abby Tompkins (Grosse Pointe, Mich./University Liggett HS) at 37:21, to put Michigan up by two.
Iowa came rushing back in the second half, scoring two goals in less than three minutes. Kate Walse scored from 10 yards out to bring the Hawkeyes within one. Linzy Wolman scored the equalizer for Iowa at 74:21 of the second half. The Wolverines challenged with five second-half shots but could not capitalize.
Chavez broke the deadlock at 107:37 when she slid a shot past the Iowa goaltender for Michigan's second double overtime victory of the season. Crumpton earned her second point of the night, assisting on the game-winner.
Senior goalkeeper Carissa Stewart (Topsham, Maine/Mt. Ararat HS) played 120 minutes for the Wolverines, making seven saves and allowing two goals.
Michigan travels to Illinois on Sunday (Oct. 1) for its second game of the weekend.
