PARK RIDGE, Ill. -- University of Michigan junior Mark Pilja (Naperville, Ill./Naperville HS) has been named the Big Ten Conference Athlete of the Week for men's cross country. This marks the first time Pilja has won the honor, and the first for the Wolverines since Jay Cantin (1996-99) took the honor last season (Oct. 13).
Pilja earned the Athlete of the Week honor for his first-place title at the Sundodger Invitational on Saturday (Sept. 23) in Seattle, Wash. His victory helped the Wolverines to a runner-up finish in their first invitational meet of the season. Michigan (58 points) was edged out by host Washington (41).
Pilja's time of 23:52.04 was a record for the Lincoln Park course and gave him his first individual title of his career. The time also made Pilja the first Big Ten harrier to dip under the 24-minute barrier for 8,000 meters this season.
